Giganotosaurus (pronounced jai-ga-nuh-tuh-saw-ruhs) was a large theropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 99–97 million years ago. It was a dominant apex predator in its ecosystem. Although slightly smaller than Spinosaurus, it was comparable to or slightly larger than Tyrannosaurus rex in overall length.

Giganotosaurus was an obligate carnivore and primarily hunted large herbivorous dinosaurs, though it may have scavenged opportunistically. Fossil evidence suggests it reached lengths of approximately 40–45 feet (12–14 meters) and an estimated height of around 13 feet (4 meters) at the hips.

Phylogenetically, Giganotosaurus belongs to the family Carcharodontosauridae, a clade of large-bodied theropod dinosaurs characterized by blade-like, serrated teeth adapted for slicing flesh. Other members of this family include Mapusaurus, Carcharodontosaurus, Meraxes, Acrocanthosaurus, Tyrannotitan, Concavenator, Sauroniops, and Veterupristisaurus.
